The first 24 hours

What should I do in the first 24 hours after an AI flag?

What you do before the meeting matters more than the score itself.

  1. 01

Why should I pause before I reply?

Read the email or report twice. Note the deadline to respond and exactly what is being alleged: AI use, plagiarism or both.

  2. 02

Why should I avoid humaniser tools?

Paraphrasers and “humaniser” tools change the wording, not the authorship, and Turnitin now detects text run through them. It can turn a query into a stronger case.

  3. 03

    What evidence should I collect?

Your notes, outline, every draft, Word or Google Docs version history, the sources you read and any AI declaration you submitted.

  4. 04

What does my university’s AI policy allow?

Check what your module allows. Some allow AI for ideas with a declaration; some ban it, including some grammar tools.

  5. 05

How do I explain how I wrote my TMA?

Be ready to say how you chose your argument, where each source came from and how the draft changed. That is what panels test.

Understand the report

What does my Turnitin AI score really mean?

What the number can and cannot tell you, explained without jargon.

Why is the AI score a prediction, not proof?

The AI score is the share of qualifying text that Turnitin’s model predicts was AI-generated. Turnitin itself says it should not be the only basis for action against a student.

Why do low AI scores show as an asterisk?

Scores between 1% and 19% appear as an asterisk rather than a number, because results in that range are less reliable.

Why are non-native writers flagged more often?

Plain, predictable sentence patterns can look machine-like. In a 2025 UK case (OIA CS072504), the ombudsman found a provider had relied on the AI percentage without weighing drafts or the student’s writing background.

Which universities are rethinking AI scores?

Some universities have paused or limited the AI indicator after large numbers of referrals. Your evidence and your explanation still matter most.

How we help

How can a tutor help with my AI flag at my university?

The law and your university’s rules decide what we can do. We tell you up front.

SUSS · Wawasan · OUM · Arab Open University

Fix the flagged parts with a human tutor

  • We read the report and mark which passages are flagged and why.
  • A human tutor rewrites those passages in natural English from your notes and sources, with real references.
  • You get a fresh similarity report and keep every draft as a record.
  • We explain the AI declaration your module asks for, so it is accurate.

Open University · Open Universities Australia

Build your evidence and revise in your own voice

  • We explain the report: what the score can and cannot show.
  • We help you organise drafts, notes and version history into a clear timeline.
  • Practice questions for your academic conduct meeting.
  • Guidance on revising flagged sections yourself, as UK and Australian rules require.

What we will never do

  • Run your work through AI, paraphrasers or humaniser tools
  • Promise a 0% AI score or “undetectable” work
  • Create fake drafts, notes or version history
  • Contact your university, tutor or panel

Integrity & AI policy

How do we give honest help when your TMA is questioned?

An AI flag is a question about how your TMA was written. The best answer is real evidence and human writing, which is all we offer.

Every rewrite and comment comes from a person, and every reference is checked against the real source.

Important: Every university treats submitting someone else’s work as your own, or undeclared AI use, as academic misconduct. Read your module’s rules before you submit and complete any AI declaration it asks for.

  • Help that fits your university

Model answers for SUSS, Wawasan, OUM and AOU students. Review, guidance and AI-flag support for OU and OUA students.

  • Written by people, not AI

Every model answer, comment and rewrite comes from a human tutor in your subject. No AI text generators, no paraphrasing tools.

  • Real, checkable references

Every source we cite exists and is formatted in your module’s style. We never invent a reference.

  • Honest about AI checks

We do not promise grades, 0% AI or “undetectable” work. Turnitin now flags text run through humaniser tools, so we do not use them.

Questions

Turnitin AI Flag FAQs

More in our FAQ.

Ask on WhatsApp

Prefer to work it out yourself? Read our free TMA guides, the Open University TMA writing guide or see how TMA help works.

Can Turnitin be wrong about AI?
Yes. The AI indicator predicts, it does not prove, and Turnitin says its score should not be used on its own to decide misconduct. Formal, simple or heavily edited writing can be flagged even when no AI was used.
My TMA was flagged but I didn’t use AI. How do I prove it?
Show how the work was built: notes, outline, dated drafts, version history in Word or Google Docs, and the sources you read. Then explain your argument in your own words at the meeting. We help you organise this evidence and practise the explanation.
I used ChatGPT for ideas. Is that misconduct?
It depends on your module’s rules. Some allow AI for brainstorming if you declare it; others do not allow it at all. Check the policy, be honest in any declaration, and never submit AI-generated text as your own writing.
Can you make my TMA pass the AI detector?
We will not promise that, because nobody honestly can, and tools that claim to are now detected themselves. What we do is replace AI-sounding or AI-written parts with human writing based on your notes and sources (SUSS, Wawasan, OUM and AOU students), or guide your own revision (Open University and OUA students).
What happens at an academic conduct meeting?
Usually an officer or panel asks how you wrote the work, about your sources and drafts, and whether you used AI. The tone is fact-finding. Bring your evidence, answer calmly and say clearly what you did and did not do.
Does Grammarly count as AI?
It can. Spelling fixes are usually fine, but rewriting or generating text with tools like GrammarlyGO may count as AI use under your module’s policy. Check the rules and declare it if they ask.
Will you contact my university for me?
No. We never contact your university or tutor. Everything stays between you and us, and you decide what to submit and say.
