Life does not pause for a TMA cut-off date. Illness, caring duties, a crisis at work or a bereavement can leave you days behind with no way to catch up. The Open University allows TMA extensions for exactly these situations, but there are rules on who decides, how long you can have and which assignments can be extended. Knowing them before you ask makes the request quicker and less stressful.
Can I get an extension on an OU TMA?
Yes, in most cases. The OU’s TMA and iCMA policy says that if unforeseen circumstances prevent you from submitting your TMA on time, you may request an extension. Extensions are meant for genuine difficulties, not for general time pressure that could have been planned around, so be honest about what has happened.
There are some important exceptions:
- iCMAs cannot be extended. The policy is clear that extensions are not available for interactive computer-marked assignments.
- The final TMA is restricted. Extensions for the TMA before the exam, EMA or emTMA are only granted in exceptional cases.
- EMAs and exams follow different rules and are not covered by a TMA extension.
Who decides whether I get an OU TMA extension?
Your tutor. The policy says to contact your tutor first, as soon as you know you will not be able to submit on time. Tutors can grant extensions themselves, so you do not need to go through a separate office for a standard request.
If your module uses the OU’s newer TMA submission service, you are encouraged to request an extension through the module website. Your tutor can then approve it, decline it or suggest a different submission date. You can still contact your tutor directly if you need to. The Help Centre lists which modules use the new service.
How long can an OU TMA extension be?
Here is how the rules in the TMA and iCMA policy fit together:
| Situation | What the policy allows |
|---|---|
| Standard TMA, tutor-approved | Up to 21 days |
| Longer than 21 days | Only in exceptional cases, with additional authorisation from the faculty |
| Final TMA before the exam, EMA or emTMA | Exceptional cases only; cannot run past the first day of the month in which the module ends, unless you have a disability |
| Final TMA with a disability-related need | Up to three weeks can be requested |
| iCMA | No extensions |
Your tutor decides how long to give within these limits. Asking for the time you genuinely need, rather than the maximum, tends to make the conversation easier, and it protects your study time for the next assignment.
When should I ask for my OU TMA extension?
As early as possible, and always before the cut-off date. The policy describes a TMA submitted after the cut-off without an agreed extension as late. A late TMA may not be accepted for marking. Your tutor might still give feedback, but may not record a score, which counts as zero.
Signs that it is time to ask:
- You have lost several study days to illness, caring or work and cannot make them up.
- Something serious has happened in your personal life.
- A disability or health condition has flared up.
- You realise the gap between where you are and the cut-off is not realistic, even with extra hours.
Do not wait until the last evening hoping things will improve. Tutors can help far more when they hear early, and they may have suggestions besides an extension.
What should I say when I request an OU TMA extension?
Keep your message short, clear and specific. Your tutor needs to know which assignment, why, and what new date you are asking for. The policy does not list specific documents you must provide, but your tutor may ask for a little more detail. You do not need to share more personal information than is needed to explain the situation.
Here is a template you can adapt:
Subject: Extension request for [module code] TMA0[X]
Dear [tutor’s name],
I am writing to ask for an extension for TMA0[X], due on [cut-off date]. [One or two sentences on what has happened, for example: I have been unwell for the past ten days and have been unable to study.] I have completed [brief progress, for example: my plan and around half of Part 1].
Would it be possible to submit by [proposed date]? I am happy to discuss this if a different date would work better.
Thank you for your help.

Showing what you have already done reassures your tutor that you are engaged and that the new date is realistic.
What if my OU TMA extension request is refused or not enough?
If your tutor declines, or the time allowed is shorter than you hoped, ask what they suggest. Possible next steps include:
- Submit what you have. A partial TMA usually earns more than a missed one. Check whether your module has thresholds or compulsory TMAs, as missing them can affect your module result.
- Talk to your Student Support Team. They can advise on wider options if your circumstances are serious or ongoing.
- Consider a Special Circumstances form. The policy points to this if extenuating circumstances have affected your submission or performance.
- Ask about substitution. On a small number of modules, a low or missed TMA can be partly replaced automatically at the end of the module. Our guide to how OU TMA scores and bands work explains how that calculation works.
How do I make the most of the extra time once it is agreed?
An extension only helps if you use it well. Treat the new date as fixed and plan backwards from it:
- Write down the new date and confirm it in your diary and on the module website.
- Split the remaining work into sections, using the marks or word limits for each part.
- Book short, regular study slots rather than one long session at the end.
- Leave at least a day before the new date for proofreading, referencing checks and uploading.
- Keep an eye on the next TMA so your extension does not push it under pressure as well.
If work is the main pressure, our guide to finishing a TMA while working full-time has a practical seven-day plan. When you are ready to submit, follow our step-by-step guide to OU TMA submission and keep your receipt number.
What else do students ask about OU TMA extensions?
Will an agreed extension lower my mark?
The policy treats a TMA as late when it is submitted after the cut-off without an agreed extension. If your tutor has agreed a new date and you submit by it, your TMA is not late under that definition. Your tutor marks it in the usual way, although your feedback may take a little longer to come back because your TMA reaches your tutor after the main batch.
Can I ask for an extension if I have a disability?
Yes. A disability can be a valid reason for an extension on any TMA, and the policy makes specific provision for the final TMA: students with a disability can request up to three weeks, through their tutor or the OU’s disability support contact depending on the deadline. If your condition affects your study regularly, tell the OU about it early so that support can be put in place before you need it.
Can I ask for more than one extension on a module?
The policy does not set a fixed number. Each request is considered on its circumstances, within the length limits above. If you find you need extensions on most assignments, speak to your Student Support Team, as there may be better options, such as additional support or changing your study plans.
What if something happens on the day of the deadline?
Contact your tutor immediately, before the cut-off time if you can. If you have already missed it, get in touch as soon as possible anyway and explain what happened. Your tutor can advise on what is still possible.
Can a tutor help me catch up after an OU TMA extension?
Your own tutor and Student Support Team come first. If you want extra one-to-one help using your extension well, our OU TMA tutors can talk through the question, help you build a realistic plan and give feedback on your draft so you can improve it yourself. We do not write or submit assignments for students, and any help you use should fit within the OU’s academic conduct policy.
